South Korea requests exemption from potential tariffs on imported semiconductors from the United States, warning of negative impact

According to media reports, the South Korean government has requested the United States to waive potential tariffs on imported semiconductors and warned that import restrictions on semiconductors and manufacturing equipment may have a negative impact on South Korean companies' US investment plans. At the same time, the South Korean Ministry of Industry, Trade and Resources announced that it has submitted written opinions to the US Department of Commerce regarding the investigation into the security impact of semiconductor imports.

At a critical moment, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae yeol had a phone call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Cho Tae yeol expressed that South Korea is willing to strengthen its alliance with the US on the basis of a strong joint defense posture, and closely cooperate to promote the South Korean US trade department to find mutually beneficial solutions through tariff negotiations.

It is worth mentioning that, against the backdrop of escalating global trade tensions, the sales momentum of South Korean semiconductors remains very strong. The latest data released by the South Korean Ministry of Industry, Trade and Resources shows that South Korea's exports in April increased by 3.7% year-on-year to 58.21 billion US dollars, setting a new historical high for the month's exports. Among them, South Korean semiconductor shipments increased by 17.2% year-on-year, reaching $11.7 billion, also setting a new historical high for the month.
